I quit my job and set up EVERYDAY Vegan

I quit my job and set up EVERYDAY Vegan

Yup, I took the plunge and quit my job.

Up until recently, I was a recruiter covering Finance and Risk in the financial services industry. My clients were from international banks in Singapore and Hong Kong.

I didn’t know it back then, but I had FOCUS: Follow One Course Until Success. I gave up blogging on SGVegan…halted product reviews…just so that I can focus on my career.

Over the course of 15 months in my previous company, FOCUS led to:

  • “Best Rookie Singapore” 2016 award
  • Promotion + 20% salary increment
  • #2 in the Singapore office billings (after the boss)

But I was unhappy.

Money can bring happiness…until the tipping point is reached.

The tipping point for me came right after returning to the office from my wedding leave.

It suddenly dawned on me that whilst I treasured the relationships that came about during the course of my work, deep down…I was really unhappy.

I had a poisonous relationship with my job.

Thus, with the support of my newly wedded husband, I made the decision to embrace my passion and thus, EVERYDAY Vegan is born. Yes! 🙂

[Giveaway] Buckwheat Green Tea and Coffee

[Giveaway] Buckwheat Green Tea and Coffee

Have you heard about the benefits of Buckwheat?

For over a year, I’ve been consuming Buckwheat Green Tea from Buckwheat Health Products Pte Ltd (BHP), a Singapore-based company founded in 2010.

BHP is now currently sold in over 40 medical halls and restaurants island-wide and have helped many Singaporeans health wise. BHP has since earned many awards such as SME1 Asia Awards 2011, Top 100 Singapore Excellence Award 2011/2012 and Singapore Brand 2012 Award

What’s so special about BHP? Well, instead of using normal Buckwheat, BHP choses to use Black Pearl Buckwheat where the rutin content is a few fold much higher than normal buckwheat. I was told that…

  • Normal Buckwheat pricing US$0.50 to US$2 per kg.
  • Black Pearl Buckwheat pricing US$21 to US$2000 per kg. Depending MOQ.

Here’s an image that shows the benefits of Black Pearl Buckwheat:

SGVegan_Black Pearl Buckwheat

The green tea used is sencha, harvested within 14 days from 50-500 year old green tea trees as BHP says that such trees offer much better health benefits such as prevention of cancer or stopping cancer cells from replicating. As such, the price per kg of green tea leaves are more expensive compared to the usual green tea.

In short, enjoying BHP products help to:
  1. Reduce High Blood Sugar
  2. Reduce High Blood Pressure
  3. Reduce High Cholesterol

And also, it will additionally improve kidney and liver function and reduce weight! 🙂

The Roasted Buckwheat Green Tea is very smooth and delicious when consumed hot. The tea bag is made of really good material, and I can get at least 3 cups of tea just from 1 teabag.

After drinking this Roasted Buckwheat Green Tea from BHP, I personally find that the rest of the general green tea has a very “siap” taste.

The Buckwheat Green Tea can contains much lesser sugar compared to the other green tea drinks in the market and is very delicious when consumed chilled with a meal. Mmmmhhhmmm.

I’m not a coffee person so I’ve not tried the coffee but my grandmother enjoyed it so much, I heard that she finished the 5 packs I passed to her very fast!

So, with the upcoming CNY, I would like to share this great Singapore products from BHP, so that we can enjoy our sugar rich CNY cookies! 🙂

A clean way to spring clean for the upcoming Chinese New Year in Feb!

A clean way to spring clean for the upcoming Chinese New Year in Feb!

(By Angela)
Yet, do you know that common household cleaning products can contain unsafe ingredients that can cause problems in your health? Look out for these ingredients: 2-Butoxphenol, which can cause skin and eye irritations, phthalates (Synthetic fragrances) and synthetic colourant dyes which may cause cancer and other adverse health effects.

Household Cleaning Products Survey 2015 show that 70% of Singaporeans fail to look into green alternatives for household cleaning products.

As a tutor with a home-based business, I tend to cook a lot at home and do household chores myself.

Coming from a family of four, I do most of the dishwashing while my mum washes the clothes mostly.

I came across Biohome, a product range for green household cleaning purposes when I was shopping at Fairprice. These products are made from 100% plant based active ingredients and are therefore vegan by default. I tried the following three products-Dishwashing Detergent, Laundry Detergent and Floor Cleaner.

Dishwashing Detergent

I find that general dishwashing detergent happens to irritate my skin, and leave my hands greasy.

Random fact: Do you know that a hawker works from 5.20am to 11.00pm every day, serving 100 to 120 plates a day. And most hawkers wash the dishes by themselves. I observed that many of them have wrinkly hands and dry skin that get sensitive and red easily. I am actually afraid that I might develop hand wrinkles in the long run, with so much chemicals added to my hands every day.

The detergent is made of derived ingredients from coconut. I like that it removes grease from plates well without leaving any residue or grease. I just need a pump of detergent to clean a load of dishes. It also helps to save water due to its low foam formula. My hands feel soft and smooth, with a slight lemongrass and green tea fragrance, but the fragrance smells slightly chemical.

Laundry Detergent

Due to the rainy season, we sometimes take in clothes that are not completely dry because another round of laundry needs to be hung in the same spot. The clothes tend to smell bad and it is because fillers interact with the bacteria and moisture and cause bad odors.

But my mum found that there was no bad smell after leaving clothes in the open. Perhaps it is because this laundry detergent contains no fillers.

The laundry detergent cleans the clothes well using Plantmoist technology and comes with slight Hyacinth and Nectarine fragrance. The detergent is suitable for indoor drying as well.

The laundry detergent is very concentrated, so my mum just needs to use a little bit each time. My mum found lots of laundry suds with just a little bit of detergent and water.

Floor cleaner

The floor cleaner is also made from natural ingredients. It cleans the greasy floor of my kitchen well.

The floor also doesn’t feel sticky. It does not contain any wax though so don’t expect that your floor will look sparkly shiny. There is a slight lemongrass and green tea fragrance that still reminds me of chemicals. I love to lie on the clean, nice smelling floor and read books!

Summary – Angela’s thoughts:

I am overall satisfied with the green household cleaning products. Though they just contain natural ingredients, their cleaning power is still comparable to conventional cleaning products. The price is also quite affordable. The packaging also looks great. If you want a free trial of Biohome products, just head over to its Facebook page and send through your personal details.

SGVegan’s thoughts:

You can commonly find Bio-Home products in the major supermarkets in Singapore, such as the image below which I took in NTUC:

SGVegan_BioHomeNTUC

Do note that for the Delicate Bio-Home laundry detergent, it contains hydrolysed silk protein, which Bio-Home is only able to verify that the silk worms emerge hatched from the weaved silk cocoons (they eat their way out) but not of the hatched adult moth’s well-bring.

SGVegan has chosen not to review/use the delicate version as we know that usually such silk worms emerge with underdeveloped mouth parts and unable to fly (source).

Here is what Bio-Home has replied with regards to the use of this hydrolysed silk protein in their delicate  laundry detergent:

With regards to the process of drawing the silk protein, supplier has indicated that it is taken after the silkworm have morph into moth because they only need to extract the protein found in the silk by hydrolysing it unlike fabric manufacturer who needs pure and undamaged silk before silkworm turn into moth.

Therefore we do not harm the silkworm – clearly being a eco green brand, we have taken steps to ensure that does not happen. There are no other plant based compounds that has similar silk protein structure.

Why we use silk protein because it is a natural ingredient that is suitable for people with sensitive skin. With more exposure to chemicals on a daily basis (be it processed food, cleaning agent or simply the haze / air) more and more people are getting skin irritation and skin sensitivity.

Silk protein protects and retain moisture on the skin.

I personally find that when I use the regular laundry detergent, I need to use more and sun dry my clothes. Air drying in an enclosed area will lead to some clothes smelling bad. But otherwise, I really like the scent.

Like Angela mentioned, the floor cleaner also foams up really well. Just a tiny small amount in a large pail does the job when mopping.

With regards to the multi-purpose cleaning spray, I personally find that if I happen to take a whiff of the spray scent while spraying, I end up choking as the smell is really strong. So do be careful when using it.

Giveaway!

I have 2 sample bags from Bio-Home, each containing a small bottle of laundry detergent, floor cleaner, dishwashing liquid and multi-purpose cleaner.

Que Origin: Natural Shower Gels made with Essential Oils

Que Origin: Natural Shower Gels made with Essential Oils

Today is the launch date (1pm) in Singapore for Que Origin, a shower gel that is made with entirely natural ingredients.

Que Origin is a completely new brand started from scratch with the aim to provide nourishing body care. The first product is the Shower Bath which can be both used as a body wash and bubble bath. It is formulated with natural Argan Oil, infused with botanical extracts (grapefruit, raspberry, aloe vera) and scented with natural essential oils only. Numerous harmful chemicals have been excluded, making the process of formulation a challenge, but it was successfully achieved! 🙂

Here is an image to show you what has been excluded in Que Origin shower gels:

Que Origin Free From List

Carefully selected essential oils from Australia are transported to facilities with GMP for manufacturing in Korea. As such, each and every bottle was made with the purest ingredients in an advance facility. So what’s exactly in the bottle?

Que Origin List 1

Que Origin List 2

So basically the base (1st 2 ingredients) of the shower gel is water and cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB), an organic compound derived from coconut oil and dimethylaminopropylamine.

This is the rating for CAPB from the EWG (Environmental Working Group) website:

EWG cocamidopropyl betaine rating

Que Origin shower gel comes in 2 sizes:

Que Origin: 250mL, $7.90 (left) and 730mL, $14.80 (right)

I (together with the rest of you who voted on pricing) was surprised to learn that the price of the shower gels are very very reasonable!

250mL: $7.90
730mL: $14.80
Customise, 250mL*: $10.90 (more details to be announced soon)

Que Origin contacted me in mid Dec 2015 and I was excited to learn of this new brand that will be launching in Singapore.

Just 2 days ago, the package was delivered to me:

Que Origin product sent

The cardboard box even had the Que Origin logo on it (not shown). Well, they got me hooked on my 1st impression. I will definitely enjoy my shower everyday! 🙂

As seen in the featured image right at the top of the page, I received 3 x 250mL of each scent (Rose Geranium, Lavender and Lemongrass), of which the Lavender scent is personalised with the SGVegan logo on it.

It was an interesting experience as the shower gel when squeezed out, came out with bubbles. Mind you, its not foamy, but I suspect air bubbles so as to make it easier to lather onto the body.

Que Origin Shower gel
Notice the air bubbles? This is from the Lavender shower gel.

I was really looking forward to the rose geranium and lemongrass scent as these are not usually found in the market.

The Que Origin shower gels all smelled like the actual essential oils, and I would say, guys would definitely like the Lemongrass. If you are looking for a more flowery scent for your female friend, Rose Geranium is the one. Or, if you want something less flowery but more soothing and calming, Lavender is the one to go for.

I like that when I shower with it, my skin feels much softer and moist! 🙂

Oh, did I mention that you can personalise your gift to your friend in just 4 simple steps?

Que Origin Personalised gift

There are currently only 3 scents (Rose Geranium, Lavender, Lemongrass). More details will be announced soon with regards to customising your scent.

[Vines and Roots] The Victorian Garden’s Basil and Lemongrass Mosquito Repellent Lotion

[Vines and Roots] The Victorian Garden’s Basil and Lemongrass Mosquito Repellent Lotion
SGVegan_Vines and Roots logo
SGVegan_Vines and Roots logo

Slightly over a fortnight ago, Vines and Roots delivered a mosquito repellent lotion from the range “The Victorian Garden”.

Vines and Roots_SGVegan_Basil and Lemongrass mosquito repellent

I’ve only known about Citronella used as a mosquito repellent so it was news to me that wild African Basil and Lemongrass are ancient herbs traditionally used by indigenous people to naturally and effectively repel mosquitos and other pesky flies.

Vines and Roots_SGVegan_Basil and Lemongrass mosquito repellent details

As seen on the bottle, the basil and lemongrass mosquito repellent lotion is chemical-free (no parabens, no petrochemicals, no silicones, no synthetic fragrances) which accounts for the 3 months period-after-opening symbol. There is also a Beauty Without Cruelty rabbit symbol to represent that no animals had to undergo testing with this mosquito repellent lotion.

The bottom photo shows the list of ingredients in this mosquito repellent lotion. Notice that Macadamia Oil, Avocado Oil and Shea Butter is included in this mosquito repellent, enabling it to be used as a creamy, but non-sticky body lotion.
(Note: The mosquito repellent lotion contains beeswax, please be aware. I only noticed this after using the product.)

Vines and Roots_SGVegan_Basil and Lemongrass mosquito repellent ingredients

The Victorian Garden also combined other insect-resistant botanical extracts of Thyme, Camphor, Litsea Cubena (Litsea oil) and Lavender into this mosquito repellent, making it even more potent against mosquitos.

As I am not a very outdoors-y person, I did not get the opportunity to try out the basil and lemongrass mosquito repellent lotion until yesterday when I went to the Jurong Bird Park with the boyfriend.

As I am afraid of itchy mosquito bites, I applied the basil and lemongrass mosquito repellent lotion liberally over my legs and arms. The boyfriend being my test subject, decided to go without the mosquito repellent lotion.

Vines and Roots_SGVegan_Basil and Lemongrass mosquito repellent on hands

The basil and lemongrass mosquito repellent lotion is very smooth and light. As I spread it over my legs and arms, I noticed that it is not a very light lotion, meaning that it took a few rubs before the lotion was absorbed into my skin.

The smell is pleasant too, much better than citronella. Anyone who used citronella will definitely recognise the very distinctive citronella scent. Which is why I like this basil and lemongrass mosquito repellent lotion as it does not smell distinctively of a mosquito repellent. This would definitely be very suitable for babies. 🙂

After walking around for less than 30 mins, the boyfriend surrendered (finally!) to the itchy mosquito bites and asked if he can use the basil and lemongrass mosquito repellent lotion, which, he declares, does the job as no more pesky mosquitoes bit him.

At the end of the day, I didn’t get any mosquito bites, but I got a slight red itch after 3 hours, which I believe is likely due to the mosquito repellent lotion being absorbed into the skin after 3 hours and needs to be reapplied.

I will definitely recommend this Basil and Lemongrass Mosquito Repellent Lotion for the outdoors and especially for babies/children/people who dislike the smell of citronella. As a mosquito repellent that doubles up as a moisturiser too, I would definitely recommend you to get this product. It would be a bonus if future formulations of this mosquito repellent lotion can be made without beeswax.

The Basil and Lemongrass Mosquito Repellent Lotion retails at SGD20 for 100mL and SGD40 for 250mL. Click on any image to bring you to the website to purchase it directly.
