A clean way to spring clean for the upcoming Chinese New Year in Feb!

A clean way to spring clean for the upcoming Chinese New Year in Feb!

(By Angela)
Yet, do you know that common household cleaning products can contain unsafe ingredients that can cause problems in your health? Look out for these ingredients: 2-Butoxphenol, which can cause skin and eye irritations, phthalates (Synthetic fragrances) and synthetic colourant dyes which may cause cancer and other adverse health effects.

Household Cleaning Products Survey 2015 show that 70% of Singaporeans fail to look into green alternatives for household cleaning products.

As a tutor with a home-based business, I tend to cook a lot at home and do household chores myself.

Coming from a family of four, I do most of the dishwashing while my mum washes the clothes mostly.

I came across Biohome, a product range for green household cleaning purposes when I was shopping at Fairprice. These products are made from 100% plant based active ingredients and are therefore vegan by default. I tried the following three products-Dishwashing Detergent, Laundry Detergent and Floor Cleaner.

Dishwashing Detergent

I find that general dishwashing detergent happens to irritate my skin, and leave my hands greasy.

Random fact: Do you know that a hawker works from 5.20am to 11.00pm every day, serving 100 to 120 plates a day. And most hawkers wash the dishes by themselves. I observed that many of them have wrinkly hands and dry skin that get sensitive and red easily. I am actually afraid that I might develop hand wrinkles in the long run, with so much chemicals added to my hands every day.

The detergent is made of derived ingredients from coconut. I like that it removes grease from plates well without leaving any residue or grease. I just need a pump of detergent to clean a load of dishes. It also helps to save water due to its low foam formula. My hands feel soft and smooth, with a slight lemongrass and green tea fragrance, but the fragrance smells slightly chemical.

Laundry Detergent

Due to the rainy season, we sometimes take in clothes that are not completely dry because another round of laundry needs to be hung in the same spot. The clothes tend to smell bad and it is because fillers interact with the bacteria and moisture and cause bad odors.

But my mum found that there was no bad smell after leaving clothes in the open. Perhaps it is because this laundry detergent contains no fillers.

The laundry detergent cleans the clothes well using Plantmoist technology and comes with slight Hyacinth and Nectarine fragrance. The detergent is suitable for indoor drying as well.

The laundry detergent is very concentrated, so my mum just needs to use a little bit each time. My mum found lots of laundry suds with just a little bit of detergent and water.

Floor cleaner

The floor cleaner is also made from natural ingredients. It cleans the greasy floor of my kitchen well.

The floor also doesn’t feel sticky. It does not contain any wax though so don’t expect that your floor will look sparkly shiny. There is a slight lemongrass and green tea fragrance that still reminds me of chemicals. I love to lie on the clean, nice smelling floor and read books!

Summary – Angela’s thoughts:

I am overall satisfied with the green household cleaning products. Though they just contain natural ingredients, their cleaning power is still comparable to conventional cleaning products. The price is also quite affordable. The packaging also looks great. If you want a free trial of Biohome products, just head over to its Facebook page and send through your personal details.

SGVegan’s thoughts:

You can commonly find Bio-Home products in the major supermarkets in Singapore, such as the image below which I took in NTUC:

Do note that for the Delicate Bio-Home laundry detergent, it contains hydrolysed silk protein, which Bio-Home is only able to verify that the silk worms emerge hatched from the weaved silk cocoons (they eat their way out) but not of the hatched adult moth’s well-bring.

SGVegan has chosen not to review/use the delicate version as we know that usually such silk worms emerge with underdeveloped mouth parts and unable to fly (source).

Here is what Bio-Home has replied with regards to the use of this hydrolysed silk protein in their delicate  laundry detergent:

With regards to the process of drawing the silk protein, supplier has indicated that it is taken after the silkworm have morph into moth because they only need to extract the protein found in the silk by hydrolysing it unlike fabric manufacturer who needs pure and undamaged silk before silkworm turn into moth.

Therefore we do not harm the silkworm – clearly being a eco green brand, we have taken steps to ensure that does not happen. There are no other plant based compounds that has similar silk protein structure.

Why we use silk protein because it is a natural ingredient that is suitable for people with sensitive skin. With more exposure to chemicals on a daily basis (be it processed food, cleaning agent or simply the haze / air) more and more people are getting skin irritation and skin sensitivity.

Silk protein protects and retain moisture on the skin.

I personally find that when I use the regular laundry detergent, I need to use more and sun dry my clothes. Air drying in an enclosed area will lead to some clothes smelling bad. But otherwise, I really like the scent.

Like Angela mentioned, the floor cleaner also foams up really well. Just a tiny small amount in a large pail does the job when mopping.

With regards to the multi-purpose cleaning spray, I personally find that if I happen to take a whiff of the spray scent while spraying, I end up choking as the smell is really strong. So do be careful when using it.

I have 2 sample bags from Bio-Home, each containing a small bottle of laundry detergent, floor cleaner, dishwashing liquid and multi-purpose cleaner.

[Giveaway] Handmade Heroes – 100% all natural, vegan and cruelty free skincare in Singapore

[Giveaway] Handmade Heroes – 100% all natural, vegan and cruelty free skincare in Singapore

Hello there SGVegan readers!

We’re now reaching the end of January. Hope all of you have been well, healthy and happy. Here’s wishing you all a belated Happy New Year and may everyone of you have a prosperous healthy year ahead! 🙂

As the title of this blog post goes, I’m conducting a giveaway for the new year, courtesy of Handmade Heroes. There will be 2 prizes up for grabs, so read on!

Handmade Heroes is a local homegrown brand founded by Lynsey and launched in December 2014. As a firm believer of natural ingredients, a plant based vegan for 2 years and a self-proclaimed modern day hippie, Handmade Heroes embodies everything Lynsey stands for.

As the name goes, all the products retailing on Handmade Heroes are all handmade by Lynsey. Everything is vegan, cruelty free, 100% all natural with no parabens, preservatives or synthetic chemicals used. All the packaging used are BPA-free. Even the ingredients contained in Handmade Heroes products follow the EWG (Environmental Working Group) ratings. Read their FAQ here.

So in mid-December last year before I headed to India, Lynsey sent me a package of goodies to review, and 2 prizes as giveaway for you readers. Keep scrolling down for more info!

I love how simple yet elegant the delivery was. Inside, there was even a handwritten card personally written by Lynsey. How could one not love Handmade Heroes? Such small gestures really makes one feel happy and blessed to receive this wonderful bag of goodies!

After trying out the Handmade Heroes products I was sent, here are some of my thoughts.

First up, Handmade Heroes: Butt Kickin’ Deep Detoxing Coffee Scrub – Cinnamon Chai

The name really caught my eye when I was browsing the website. Butt Kickin? Oh yeah, I would love to kick my cellulite away!! Go away fats!! Shooo~~

Upon opening the bottle, I noticed the texture was quite watery and I had to give it a stir. It was a bit messy after the shower as the bathroom floor was covered with coffee bits.

Inspiration struck me, and I placed my bottle of Handmade Heroes: Butt Kickin’ Deep Detoxing Coffee Scrub – Cinnamon Chai into the fridge. When I took it out of the fridge, I liked the drier texture. Even after leaving it outside in Singapore’s humidity for the next few weeks, the drier texture did not return to the initial watery texture when I first opened the bottle. Take a look at the before/after pics below!

And what does it look like when used on the body? Although the texture looks rough, the Handmade Heroes: Butt Kickin’ Deep Detoxing Coffee Scrub – Cinnamon Chai contains fine bits of organic rice as seen by the white bits…

My thoughts about Handmade Heroes: Butt Kickin’ Deep Detoxing Coffee Scrub – Cinnamon Chai?

Personally, I love the coffee scent as its smells really awesome. After trying on my body, I prefer to use it on the problematic cellulite areas such as my thighs, butt and tummy in the hopes that prolong use would butt kick the cellulite away! Also, I believe it would be awesome for the feet as it leaves a moisturised layer on my skin, though not that greasy. However for my body, I preferred to use the other scrub, which is Handmade Heroes: Super Duper Nourishing Rice Scrub – Christmas Mint.

So what makes this other Handmade Heroes: Super Duper Nourishing Rice Scrub – Christmas Mint my preferred scrub for the rest of my body?

First, see the before/after pic of the bottle when kept in the fridge:

SGVegan_Handmade Heroes Super Duper Nourishing Rice Scrub - Christmas Mint

Notice the drier texture after keeping it in the fridge? I prefer it this way, rather than slopping the watery scrub over my body. Guess its just my preference. So keep it in the fridge if you prefer like me to have a drier texture. Do note that the texture remains, it does not “melt” even after you leave it out for a long time after taking it out of the fridge.

And this is how it looks on my hands:

SGVegan_Handmade Heroes Super Duper Nourishing Rice Scrub - Christmas Mint on hands
SGVegan_Handmade Heroes Super Duper Nourishing Rice Scrub – Christmas Mint on hands

So why do I love this Handmade Heroes: Super Duper Nourishing Rice Scrub – Christmas Mint scrub?

Well, its smoother in texture compared to the Butt Kickin’ Coffee Scrub. But what makes this scrub stand out from all the other scrubs I have ever used is the fact that while using this scrub in the hot shower, I love the smell. Nice mint scent, reminds me of Christmas and of snow. Then when I come out from the shower, and after drying myself, that went the mint tingle starts. Its a nice pleasing and cool sensation. You have to try it out yourself, this is a great product! Just don’t get too excited and use too much of the scrub in the shower as you’ll end up probably having to wear a sweater! 😉

Overall, I really love the ideology behind Handmade Heroes and it is evident on the products:

On a sidenote, this is the nicest lip tint I’ve ever used. It does not taste weird and the color is just nice to give some life to my lips on those dull-looking days! I feel safe even if I were to consume the lip tint accidentally. Handmade Heroes states on their website that the Iron Oxide and Boron Nitride contained in the lip tints are naturally occurring with a low EWG hazard rating of 2 and 0 respectively.  Read their FAQ here.

[Pure Tincture] Santaverde Age Protect Line for Dry Combination Skin

For the past 2 months, I have been consistently using the Santaverde’s new Age Protect toner and face oil in my skincare regime.

I have unique skin. It is combination skin type. But, instead of having increased oil secretions at the T zone, my skin has dual layers – oily underneath, and dry on the surface.

I am sure the rest of you who suffer from such combination skin can “feel” my agony. Not all products for dry skin are suitable for our skin.

Helen from Pure Tincture recently invited me to try out part of the new Age Protect range from Santaverde.

The full Santaverde Age Protect line consists of a toner, moisturiser, face oil and an ampoule treatment as seen below.

SGVegan_Age Protect Line
SGVegan_Age Protect Line

For the Santaverde Age Protect Moisturiser, I have only tried it in sample pack size since at that time they were out of stock for the full sized product. Helen supplied me with sufficient sample packs for a month’s use. 🙂

But for both the Santaverde Age Protect toner and face oil, full sized products were used over the past 2 months (August + September 2014).

I will not be covering the ampoule treatment in this review.

SGVegan_Santaverde Age Protect Toner and Oil

 My thoughts:

Santaverde Age Protect line:

NATRUE certified organic skin care. Free from synthetic fragrances, colourings and preservatives. Does not contain any animal ingredients (vegan).

The Santaverde Age Protect line is based on Aloe Vera Blossom.

Scent-wise, it has a slightly grassy-like smell that has a tinge of subtly-flowered “bright” scent. In simpler words, the scent is pleasant and “grows” on you the more you use it.

Santaverde Age Protect Toner:

Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice*, Rosa Damascena Flower Water*, Alcohol*, Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Flower Extract*, Cistus Incanus Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract*, Astragalus Membranaceus Root Extract, Atractyloides Macrocephala Root Extract, Bupleurum Falcatum Root Extract, Levulinic Acid, Sodium Levulinate, Lavandula Angustifolia Oil*, Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate, Citric Acid, Silver Sulfate, Parfum**, Limonene, Linalool, Citronellol, Geraniol.

*Certified organic

**Natural essential oils

The Age Protect Toner is not very watery like most toners. When shaken, I noticed the bubbles formed do not “disappear” that fast. However, there is no need to give the Age Protect Toner a shake before use.

I use about 6-8 sprays of the Age Protect Toner after cleansing my face. The bottle dispenses the Age Protect Toner in a fine mist onto my face. I am reminded of the scent of roses whenever I spray this Age Protect Toner, which improves my mood as I feel elegant (or atas) and obtrusive.

The Age Protect Toner is based on Aloe Vera juice and rose water which are organic.

*Note: While most people are concerned about not having any alcohol in their skincare products, particularly toners, the minimum percentage of alcohol in the Age Protect Oil comes from the plant and flower extracts. The Age Protect Toner’s alcohol content is also less than 5%. I do not find the use of either the Age Protect Toner or Oil drying. In fact, my skin now feels more balanced, and less prone to dryness.*

Santaverde Age Protect Moisturiser:

Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice*, Cocos Nucifera Oil*, Cetearyl Alcohol, Aloe Barbadensis Flower Extract*, Alcohol*, Persea Gratissima Oil*, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil*, Butyrospermum Parkii Butter*, Lavandula Angustifolia Flower Extract*, Prunus Armeniaca Kernel Oil*, Myristyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Glycerin, Sodium Lactate, Oenothera Biennis Oil*, Sodium Hyaluronate, Astragalus Membranaceus Root Extract, Atractyloides Macrocephala Root Extract, Bupleurum Falcatum Root Extract, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil*, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Tocopherol, Sodium Phytate, Sodium Cetearyl Sulfate, Levulinic Acid, Sodium Levulinate, Silver Sulfate, Parfum**, Limonene, Linalool, Citronellol, Geraniol, Citral, Benzyl Benzoate, Coumarin.

*Certified organic

**Natural essential oils

As mentioned above, the Age Protect Moisturiser was provided in sample pack sizes. I combined the packs into a small travel sized plastic container so that it was more convenient for daily use.

When used in combination as part of the whole Age Protect line, the moisturiser is creamy, but yet easily absorbed.

During the month of August which I was using the Age Protect Moisturiser, I find my skin does not suffer too badly from dryness. I would recommend getting the full sized Age Protect Moisturiser.

Santaverde Age Protect Oil:

SGVegan_Santaverde Age Protect Oil
SGVegan_Santaverde Age Protect Oil

Ingredients: Prunus Armeniaca Kernel Oil*, Olea Europaea Fruit Oil*, Carthamus Tinctorius Seed Oil*, Isoamyl Laurate, Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil*, Oenothera Biennis Oil*, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil*, Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate, Aloe Barbadensis Flower Extract*, Parfum**, Glycerin, Astragalus Membranaceus Root Extract, Atractyloides Macrocephala Root Extract, Bupleurum Falcatum Root Extract, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil*, Tocopherol, Alcohol*, Citric Acid, Limonene, Linalool, Citronellol, Geraniol, Citral, Benzyl Benzoate, Coumarin.

*Certified organic

**Natural essential oils

If you look closely at the photo, the Age Protect Oil is a two-phase oil emulsion that you have to shake before you. This way, the oil and the active ingredients at the bottom are mixed well.

The oil layer contains Apricot Kernel oil, Olive oil, Safflower oil, Jojoba oil, Evening Primrose oil, Argan oil and Sunflower oil (all organic).

The active ingredient complex consists of Aloe Vera flower and root extracts.

I use about 3-4 drops of Age Protect Oil as part of my night time regime before bed. The first few times I used it, I was not so used to the smells. However, as time went by, I got used to the slightly grassy-like smell that has a tinge of subtly-flowered “bright” scent.

Compared to other oils, after the use of this Age Protect Oil, I find that the oil has a slightly “matte” effect (not greasy) after a few minutes, which is very useful on the days I have drier skin because I can use it in the morning.

[30days™] Giveaway – Lose 1 to 2 sizes in 30 days!

Have you ever tried slimming products, yet with no visible results?

How does losing 1 to 2 sizes without going on a diet sound?

30days™ targets slimming from the viewpoint of reducing inflammation, supporting internal detoxification through the digestive and immune system. 30days™ uses 100% natural herbal extracts, beta glucans and minerals.

This patented 30days™ slimming solution combines 30days™ supplements with colon cleansing. Coupled with supporting exercise and eating, one can expect to achieve optimal results.

The two 30days™ products are 30days™ HBT (Hips, Buttocks & Thighs) for the reduction of fat in the hips, buttocks and thighs (left) and 30days™ Waistline for waistline reduction (right).

How do you know which one of the two are suitable for you?

Well, during the media launch, we were informed that if you are a pear body shape, which means you tend to have a heavier bottom, then the 30days™ HBT is more suitable for you.

If you have an apple body shape, or tend to gain weight on your tummy, then the 30days™ Waistline is more suitable for you.

My thoughts:

I was invited to the media launch event for 30days™.

Frankly, I was initially skeptical as I thought it was probably all just a marketing hype slimming event.

A published research article was also given to us in the media kit, together with other relevant information.

What led to try out the 30 days challenge was that during the media launch, I was pleasantly surprised to see that 30days™ believes in slimming from the inside out, which means, starting from the liver.

This means it gives the body the time to heal, detox and reduce fat (especially visceral fat, which is more harmful as its fat that collects around the internal organs).

They also shared that most Asians are dairy-intolerant, and they promote a dairy-free diet to the crowd. Which is rare.

And this product has never been tested on animals, only on humans. It contains the active ingredient β-1,3/1,6 glucans (1,3-1,6-beta-glucans) from yeast, together with herbal extracts such as artichoke, milk thistle, dandelion root, rosewood, liquorice, dong quai (female ginseng), burdock and ginger, just to name a few.

It also contains magnesium, iodine and chromium. You can check out what are the benefits of the individual ingredients for the 30days™ HBT & 30days™ Waistline under the ingredients tab.

I decided to give the 30days™ Waistline a try, since I tend to accumulate fat around my tummy. 2 in the morning before breakfast, and 2 in the evening before dinner.

SGVegan_30days™ supplement dosage

During the course of the 30 days, I noticed that my bowel movements were very frequent and smooth – whatever was eaten in the morning, came out in the evening. No force was required.

Additionally, I did not tend to want to eat snacks too. Hunger pangs were at a minimal.

During the course of 30 days, my body weight maintained well at its usual weight of 48kg.

After the course of 30 days, I did not notice major differences in my body size. Neither did I lose 1 to 2 sizes as I have a normal BMI (no need to gain or lose weight). However, I liked the smooth and frequent bowel movements.

In the research article given in the media press kit, it was stated that “…we have seen favourable effects on waist, abdominal and hip circumferences while the effect on body weight was not detectable in the short time administration (30 days).

I guess if I had gone on the 30days™ Waistline for 3 to 4 months, I would probably have seen more obvious results. 🙂

I’ve decided to share the love by giving away a box of 30days™ HBT, which retails for S$108.
