As all of us vegans can attest to: one of the top questions you will (yes, “will” not “might”!) hear is along the lines of “Wait, so where do you get your protein from?!”
Now, you have to give it to them, the meat industry has spent billions on advertisement, and have succeeded, at promoting flesh foods to be protein-filled health and power houses. But it seems as though each and every person is shocked, if not in disbelief, when you tell them you are getting the same exact amounts of protein as them… just without the harm.
So the go-to belief when someone would be asked to compile a list of protein-filled foods would more than likely consist of the following:
Fish: Salmon, Cod, Shellfish etc.
HOWEVER, a vegan would give you this list, and no, they aren’t lying to you!
Nuts: Walnuts, Pecans, Almonds, Pistachios, Cashews etc.
Soy Products i.e. Soy Milk
Beans: Navy Beans, Black Beans, Red Kidney Beans, Fava Beans, Chickpeas
Leafy Green Vegetables: Kale, Spinach, Peas, Green Beans, Lettuce, Broccoli
Grains: Quinoa, Buckwheat, Wheat etc.
The catch about following a vegan diet, however, is the responsibility that comes with it! Clearly, you will not be getting the correct nutrient levels if you aren’t basing your diet on wholesome, plant based foods. By this I mean, if you are only eating “junk food” such as fries, chips, sweets etc. (yes, this can technically be a vegan diet) then you clearly will have insufficient protein levels, not to mention other nutrients as well!
The reason this rumor about not consuming enough protein stems is because many flesh foods do in fact have more amounts of protein, but what people don’t understand is that you don’t eat meats 24/7, whereas on a vegan diet you are constantly consuming at least one of the things on the above list, thus causing protein levels to even out!
If the above list should teach you one thing, it’s that there are so so many misconceptions about veganism that keep being spread about. Everyone I have come across, for example, has told me “Why are you doing it, isn’t it really unhealthy?” NO it’s the exact opposite. Eating nothing but plants and whole foods to fuel your insides cannot have a single detrimental effect as eating dead, rotting flesh can.
These inconsistent rumors about veganism can only be dwindled through articles such as this one, as well as through word of mouth. Each time I correct my friends’ misconceptions I know that they will alter their ideas on a cruelty-free diet accordingly!
Don’t forget how powerful word of mouth really is! Let’s make the Vegan community in Singapore as big as possible. Slowly but surely, with the proper education we can stop the ignorance and misconceptions associated with veganism such as the “protein myth”.

Up until recently, I was a recruiter covering Finance and Risk in the financial services industry. My clients were from international banks in Singapore and Hong Kong.
I didn’t know it back then, but I had FOCUS: Follow One Course Until Success. I gave up blogging on SGVegan…halted product reviews…just so that I can focus on my career.
Over the course of 15 months in my previous company, FOCUS led to:
“Best Rookie Singapore” 2016 award
Promotion + 20% salary increment
#2 in the Singapore office billings (after the boss)
But I was unhappy.
Money can bring happiness…until the tipping point is reached.
The tipping point for me came right after returning to the office from my wedding leave.
It suddenly dawned on me that whilst I treasured the relationships that came about during the course of my work, deep down…I was really unhappy.
I had a poisonous relationship with my job.
Thus, with the support of my newly wedded husband, I made the decision to embrace my passion and thus, EVERYDAY Vegan is born. Yes! 🙂

As part of an exclusive group of talented beauty and lifestyle bloggers to test and review a series of green products from Vines and Roots, SGVegan was sent the 2nd star product from Vines and Roots hair care range: Africa Organics’ Shampoos and Conditioners.
As my hair tends to be on the dry side, I was recommended to give the Baobab Shampoo and Conditioner for dry and stressed/treated hair from the Africa Organics Range.
Received in office:
According to Vines and Roots, there is an important fact to note when one switches one’s hair care routine from commercial chemical based shampoos and conditioners to natural and organic hair care products.
There will be a “detox” adjustment periodwhere one’s hair may feel stiff and less-than-beautiful for a period of time as commercial hair products usually contains silicone derivatives and other synthetic products that artificially coat the hair with plastic or protein polymers to make it look and feel undamaged.
And when one’s hair is more damaged, it is more porous, and it will absorb all the synthetic and plastic polymers and gum coating agents easily, giving the impression that one’s hair is actually healthy when it is not.
Vines and Roots reply?
Your hair will need to be gently cleansed of all this toxic build up to enable it to receive moisture and protein, just like the scalp will need to be freed of any residue build up and balanced.
For the first two or three washes the hair may seem dry and more tangled. However, if you follow your shampoo with a natural/organic hair conditioner, this should be lessened and your hair will normally settle down into good condition quickly.
Depending on how much you have processed your hair in the past, the adjustment period can range from a few days to a few weeks, to completely restore your hair’s natural beauty.
Unlike other commercial shampoos, Africa Organics’ hair care range does not contain harsh sulfates, phthalates and silicones, but instead a cocktail of potent wild-harvested African plants.
Exposed to some of the most brutal and harsh conditions (i.e extreme temperatures, water shortage followed by floods), wild-harvested African plants create exceptional coping mechanisms resulting in a higher potency of activity than a controlled and cultivated environment.
So I guess this means that the Baobab superfood will be good for my dry hair, giving it the shine it deserves?
Here’s a picture of the Baobab fruit in the African landscape:
How about its benefits?
Well, it sounds like the benefits are amazing so I’ll definitely give it a go.
But let’s first have a look at the ingredients:
So what’s my take after trying out Africa Organics’ Baobab Shampoo and Conditioner?
Upon squeezing out Africa Organics’ Baobab Shampoo, I noticed a delicious fruity dessert scent, which makes me really hungry.
I noticed that it does not lather up as much, and as such, I need to use use slightly more of the Baobao shampoo to ensure that it manages to wash and lather my full head, even though my hair is short. The boyfriend, whose hair is even shorter, loved the scent of the shampoo and I caught him using my shampoo as the scent is just too hard to resist! For him, the Baobab shampoo lathers up really well for his short hair without the need to use as much shampoo as myself.
After my first wash with Africa Organics’ Baobab Shampoo and Conditioner, my hair felt soft and smooth, and it seems more volumised too. My hair texture felt so good that I did not feel the need to shampoo and condition daily if I do not perspire. Once every other day works well for me as I tend to have dry skin and so do not get greasy that easily.
After about hair a month’s use of Africa Organics’ Baobab Shampoo and Conditioner, I noticed that my scalp tends to be cleaner and less greasy. Hair texture wise though, I do not see a major difference visually but I believe my hair is healthier as it does not break/fall off as easily. I’m definitely continuing the use of Africa Organics’ Baobab Shampoo and Conditioner.

As the title of this blog post goes, I’m conducting a giveaway for the new year, courtesy of Handmade Heroes. There will be 2 prizes up for grabs, so read on!
Handmade Heroes is a local homegrown brand founded by Lynsey and launched in December 2014. As a firm believer of natural ingredients, a plant based vegan for 2 years and a self-proclaimed modern day hippie, Handmade Heroes embodies everything Lynsey stands for.
As the name goes, all the products retailing on Handmade Heroes are all handmade by Lynsey. Everything is vegan, cruelty free, 100% all natural with no parabens, preservatives or synthetic chemicals used. All the packaging used are BPA-free. Even the ingredients contained in Handmade Heroes products follow the EWG (Environmental Working Group) ratings. Read their FAQ here.
So in mid-December last year before I headed to India, Lynsey sent me a package of goodies to review, and 2 prizes as giveaway for you readers. Keep scrolling down for more info!
I love how simple yet elegant the delivery was. Inside, there was even a handwritten card personally written by Lynsey. How could one not love Handmade Heroes? Such small gestures really makes one feel happy and blessed to receive this wonderful bag of goodies!
After trying out the Handmade Heroes products I was sent, here are some of my thoughts.
First up, Handmade Heroes: Butt Kickin’ Deep Detoxing Coffee Scrub – Cinnamon Chai
The name really caught my eye when I was browsing the website. Butt Kickin? Oh yeah, I would love to kick my cellulite away!! Go away fats!! Shooo~~
Upon opening the bottle, I noticed the texture was quite watery and I had to give it a stir. It was a bit messy after the shower as the bathroom floor was covered with coffee bits.
Inspiration struck me, and I placed my bottle of Handmade Heroes: Butt Kickin’ Deep Detoxing Coffee Scrub – Cinnamon Chai into the fridge. When I took it out of the fridge, I liked the drier texture. Even after leaving it outside in Singapore’s humidity for the next few weeks, the drier texture did not return to the initial watery texture when I first opened the bottle. Take a look at the before/after pics below!
And what does it look like when used on the body? Although the texture looks rough, the Handmade Heroes: Butt Kickin’ Deep Detoxing Coffee Scrub – Cinnamon Chai contains fine bits of organic rice as seen by the white bits…
My thoughts about Handmade Heroes: Butt Kickin’ Deep Detoxing Coffee Scrub – Cinnamon Chai?
Personally, I love the coffee scent as its smells really awesome. After trying on my body, I prefer to use it on the problematic cellulite areas such as my thighs, butt and tummy in the hopes that prolong use would butt kick the cellulite away! Also, I believe it would be awesome for the feet as it leaves a moisturised layer on my skin, though not that greasy. However for my body, I preferred to use the other scrub, which is Handmade Heroes: Super Duper Nourishing Rice Scrub – Christmas Mint.
So what makes this other Handmade Heroes: Super Duper Nourishing Rice Scrub – Christmas Mint my preferred scrub for the rest of my body?
First, see the before/after pic of the bottle when kept in the fridge:
Notice the drier texture after keeping it in the fridge? I prefer it this way, rather than slopping the watery scrub over my body. Guess its just my preference. So keep it in the fridge if you prefer like me to have a drier texture. Do note that the texture remains, it does not “melt” even after you leave it out for a long time after taking it out of the fridge.
And this is how it looks on my hands:
So why do I love this Handmade Heroes: Super Duper Nourishing Rice Scrub – Christmas Mint scrub?
Well, its smoother in texture compared to the Butt Kickin’ Coffee Scrub. But what makes this scrub stand out from all the other scrubs I have ever used is the fact that while using this scrub in the hot shower, I love the smell. Nice mint scent, reminds me of Christmas and of snow. Then when I come out from the shower, and after drying myself, that went the mint tingle starts. Its a nice pleasing and cool sensation. You have to try it out yourself, this is a great product! Just don’t get too excited and use too much of the scrub in the shower as you’ll end up probably having to wear a sweater! 😉
Overall, I really love the ideology behind Handmade Heroes and it is evident on the products:
On a sidenote, this is the nicest lip tint I’ve ever used. It does not taste weird and the color is just nice to give some life to my lips on those dull-looking days! I feel safe even if I were to consume the lip tint accidentally. Handmade Heroes states on their website that the Iron Oxide and Boron Nitride contained in the lip tints are naturally occurring with a low EWG hazard rating of 2 and 0 respectively. Read their FAQ here.
So what are you waiting for?

SGVegan was chosen as part of an exclusive group of talented beauty and lifestyle bloggers to test and review a series of green products from Vines and Roots.
The very 1st star product from Vines and Roots body range is…
Soothing Body Oil with Lavender and Neroli 🙂
The Soothing Body Oil contains only 100% pure plant extracts and organic essential oils (English Lavender and Rose Geranium) packed with many therapeutic active compounds. Neroli oil is a superfood (!) for the skin as it regenerates skin cells, promotes smooth skin and restores broken capillaries. This means it is particularly suitable for mature skin as it heals scars and stretch-marks.
Plus, its vegan friendly! No animals were harmed for beauty ^-^
So, I decided to try it on the boyfriend as seen from the photo above.
He just ran 10km and had a shower (recommended to apply after a shower or bath).
I noticed he has some really visible capillaries beneath his skin. Probably the result of training for the upcoming 42km Standard Chartered Marathon.
As you can see from the before/after pic, right after the Soothing Body Oil is absorbed into the skin, I noticed that the capillaries are not so visible.
Plus, the Soothing Body Oil absorbs really rapidly into the skin, leaving a subtle satin sheen. Definitely good for ladies if we apply it onto our legs after a day of high heels..!
According to the features and benefits I was sent, this was to be expected.
Contains only 100% pure plant extracts and organic essential oils packed with many therapeutic active compounds
Hydrates, replenishes moisture and leaves skin supple
Intensively balances and nourishes skin, stimulating it to regenerate and repair without clogging pores
Lightweight formula which absorbs instantly into skin, and leaves a subtle satin sheen – no greasy residue
Calming and mood-lifting
Pleasant natural scent with a blend of citrus and floral notes
Does not contain artificial fragrances, preservatives and colorants
Non-toxic, non-sensitizing and non-irritating
Plus, it was a nice and calming back massage for the boyfriend. We felt pampered by the scent as it has hints of “atas-nes” (Singlish: high-class) to it (smells like rose) which soothes and relaxes the both of us. Although the scent was strong, it was not overpowering and sickly. Highly recommended for both genders! 🙂
In addition, what I really like about Vines and Roots Body Oil is their choice of packaging! Its a safe and eco-friendly packaging to minimise environmentally unfriendly packaging. In fact, I noticed it was easy to dispense the oil by simply giving the bottle a light shake downwards. 🙂
Vines and Roots Soothing Body Oil is currently retailing @ S$68 on their online store here.
If you purchase this Soothing Body Oil before 30 November 2014, you will receive a complimentary 100% Natural Insect Repellent from Pure Beginnings (UP: S$9). 🙂
PS: Do note that there is a slight discrepancy on the front label. The ingredients list is accurate and reflects that the only organic ingredients are English Lavender and Rose Geranium. There is also no Valerian present in the new improved formulation. Vines and Roots thanked me for picking up the discrepancies and they have promised to ensure corrective changes are reflected in their next batch of Body Oils.
Since my first post in October last year (wow, its been 1 year already!), I have been having organic facials at local holistic salon Crystal Maiden Skin Professionals at least once a month.
Facials using organic products, particularly brand “P” used at Crystal Maiden is of 100% certified COSMEBIO natural organic origin (France) with ZERO synthetic ingredients. An organic facial using “P” has a natural scent from the ingredients, like an aromatherapy relaxation session that I always fall asleep snugly every facial session.
I cannot overemphasise the importance (and benefits) of an organic facial.
But most importantly, there has been a positive difference in my skin (loving the more even glow) and I look forward to maintaining it! 🙂
Recently, I’ve not been taking my photos of myself, so do pardon the unglam photo on the right as its the only photo which shows a reasonable amount of my face.
It was taken by a friend during one of the potlucks I organised at a friend’s place in August this year. I just sweated buckets of perspiration prior to the unknown-to-me impromptu snapping of this photo.
Some of you may be aware that World Vegan Month (November) and World Vegan Day (1 November) is approaching. As such, in conjunction with Crystal Maiden, SGVegan readers get to try out an organic crystal facial at a very special deal of S$68 (UP: S$128). Valid till 30 November 2014.
