[Giveaway] Buckwheat Green Tea and Coffee

[Giveaway] Buckwheat Green Tea and Coffee

Have you heard about the benefits of Buckwheat?

For over a year, I’ve been consuming Buckwheat Green Tea from Buckwheat Health Products Pte Ltd (BHP), a Singapore-based company founded in 2010.

BHP is now currently sold in over 40 medical halls and restaurants island-wide and have helped many Singaporeans health wise. BHP has since earned many awards such as SME1 Asia Awards 2011, Top 100 Singapore Excellence Award 2011/2012 and Singapore Brand 2012 Award.

What’s so special about BHP? Well, instead of using normal Buckwheat, BHP choses to use Black Pearl Buckwheat where the rutin content is a few fold much higher than normal buckwheat. I was told that…

  • Normal Buckwheat pricing US$0.50 to US$2 per kg.
  • Black Pearl Buckwheat pricing US$21 to US$2000 per kg. Depending MOQ.

Here’s an image that shows the benefits of Black Pearl Buckwheat:

SGVegan_Black Pearl Buckwheat

The green tea used is sencha, harvested within 14 days from 50-500 year old green tea trees as BHP says that such trees offer much better health benefits such as prevention of cancer or stopping cancer cells from replicating. As such, the price per kg of green tea leaves are more expensive compared to the usual green tea.

In short, enjoying BHP products help to:
  1. Reduce High Blood Sugar
  2. Reduce High Blood Pressure
  3. Reduce High Cholesterol

And also, it will additionally improve kidney and liver function and reduce weight! 🙂

The Roasted Buckwheat Green Tea is very smooth and delicious when consumed hot. The tea bag is made of really good material, and I can get at least 3 cups of tea just from 1 teabag.

After drinking this Roasted Buckwheat Green Tea from BHP, I personally find that the rest of the general green tea has a very “siap” taste.

The Buckwheat Green Tea can contains much lesser sugar compared to the other green tea drinks in the market and is very delicious when consumed chilled with a meal. Mmmmhhhmmm.

I’m not a coffee person so I’ve not tried the coffee but my grandmother enjoyed it so much, I heard that she finished the 5 packs I passed to her very fast!

So, with the upcoming CNY, I would like to share this great Singapore products from BHP, so that we can enjoy our sugar rich CNY cookies! 🙂

Delivery is free, no minimum order, and you receive your products very fast too! Otherwise they can be found in most medical halls.

There is currently a very special price exclusive gift hamper set you can order for your family members. It comes shrink wrapped with the plastic gift tray:

Buckwheat Exclusive Gift Basket
Buckwheat Exclusive Gift Basket @ $88 (valid till 29 Feb 2016)

Do note that the Buckwheat Chia cookies contain butter and eggs and are therefore not suitable for vegans. However, the reasoning behind the Buckwheat Chia cookies is that kidney patients are unable to consume much fluids so drinking Buckwheat Green Tea/Coffee will not be suitable for them.

A clean way to spring clean for the upcoming Chinese New Year in Feb!

A clean way to spring clean for the upcoming Chinese New Year in Feb!

(By Angela)
Yet, do you know that common household cleaning products can contain unsafe ingredients that can cause problems in your health? Look out for these ingredients: 2-Butoxphenol, which can cause skin and eye irritations, phthalates (Synthetic fragrances) and synthetic colourant dyes which may cause cancer and other adverse health effects.

Household Cleaning Products Survey 2015 show that 70% of Singaporeans fail to look into green alternatives for household cleaning products.

As a tutor with a home-based business, I tend to cook a lot at home and do household chores myself.

Coming from a family of four, I do most of the dishwashing while my mum washes the clothes mostly.

I came across Biohome, a product range for green household cleaning purposes when I was shopping at Fairprice. These products are made from 100% plant based active ingredients and are therefore vegan by default. I tried the following three products-Dishwashing Detergent, Laundry Detergent and Floor Cleaner.

Dishwashing Detergent

I find that general dishwashing detergent happens to irritate my skin, and leave my hands greasy.

Random fact: Do you know that a hawker works from 5.20am to 11.00pm every day, serving 100 to 120 plates a day. And most hawkers wash the dishes by themselves. I observed that many of them have wrinkly hands and dry skin that get sensitive and red easily. I am actually afraid that I might develop hand wrinkles in the long run, with so much chemicals added to my hands every day.

The detergent is made of derived ingredients from coconut. I like that it removes grease from plates well without leaving any residue or grease. I just need a pump of detergent to clean a load of dishes. It also helps to save water due to its low foam formula. My hands feel soft and smooth, with a slight lemongrass and green tea fragrance, but the fragrance smells slightly chemical.

Laundry Detergent

Due to the rainy season, we sometimes take in clothes that are not completely dry because another round of laundry needs to be hung in the same spot. The clothes tend to smell bad and it is because fillers interact with the bacteria and moisture and cause bad odors.

But my mum found that there was no bad smell after leaving clothes in the open. Perhaps it is because this laundry detergent contains no fillers.

The laundry detergent cleans the clothes well using Plantmoist technology and comes with slight Hyacinth and Nectarine fragrance. The detergent is suitable for indoor drying as well.

The laundry detergent is very concentrated, so my mum just needs to use a little bit each time. My mum found lots of laundry suds with just a little bit of detergent and water.

Floor cleaner

The floor cleaner is also made from natural ingredients. It cleans the greasy floor of my kitchen well.

The floor also doesn’t feel sticky. It does not contain any wax though so don’t expect that your floor will look sparkly shiny. There is a slight lemongrass and green tea fragrance that still reminds me of chemicals. I love to lie on the clean, nice smelling floor and read books!

Summary – Angela’s thoughts:

I am overall satisfied with the green household cleaning products. Though they just contain natural ingredients, their cleaning power is still comparable to conventional cleaning products. The price is also quite affordable. The packaging also looks great. If you want a free trial of Biohome products, just head over to its Facebook page and send through your personal details.

SGVegan’s thoughts:

You can commonly find Bio-Home products in the major supermarkets in Singapore, such as the image below which I took in NTUC:

SGVegan_BioHomeNTUC

Do note that for the Delicate Bio-Home laundry detergent, it contains hydrolysed silk protein, which Bio-Home is only able to verify that the silk worms emerge hatched from the weaved silk cocoons (they eat their way out) but not of the hatched adult moth’s well-bring.

SGVegan has chosen not to review/use the delicate version as we know that usually such silk worms emerge with underdeveloped mouth parts and unable to fly (source).

Here is what Bio-Home has replied with regards to the use of this hydrolysed silk protein in their delicate  laundry detergent:

With regards to the process of drawing the silk protein, supplier has indicated that it is taken after the silkworm have morph into moth because they only need to extract the protein found in the silk by hydrolysing it unlike fabric manufacturer who needs pure and undamaged silk before silkworm turn into moth.

Therefore we do not harm the silkworm – clearly being a eco green brand, we have taken steps to ensure that does not happen. There are no other plant based compounds that has similar silk protein structure.

Why we use silk protein because it is a natural ingredient that is suitable for people with sensitive skin. With more exposure to chemicals on a daily basis (be it processed food, cleaning agent or simply the haze / air) more and more people are getting skin irritation and skin sensitivity.

Silk protein protects and retain moisture on the skin.

I personally find that when I use the regular laundry detergent, I need to use more and sun dry my clothes. Air drying in an enclosed area will lead to some clothes smelling bad. But otherwise, I really like the scent.

Like Angela mentioned, the floor cleaner also foams up really well. Just a tiny small amount in a large pail does the job when mopping.

With regards to the multi-purpose cleaning spray, I personally find that if I happen to take a whiff of the spray scent while spraying, I end up choking as the smell is really strong. So do be careful when using it.

Giveaway!

I have 2 sample bags from Bio-Home, each containing a small bottle of laundry detergent, floor cleaner, dishwashing liquid and multi-purpose cleaner.

Green Pea Cookie, a successful Kickstarter campaign

Green Pea Cookie, a successful Kickstarter campaign

During World Vegan Day last year on 1 November, I had a mini gathering for friends during which we sampled some green pea cookies from Green Pea Cookie.

Green Pea Cookie packets

The Green Pea Cookie team launched a successful Kickstarter campaign on the 3rd of February 2015 to increase their exposure in the US and Singapore market and raise funds for operations. In a mere 7 hours of campaign launch, the Green Pea Cookie team managed to raise a campaign target of $5,000. Till date, Green Pea Cookie has raised over $26,000, gained over 850 backers and have a total of 35,000 cookies pledged. The campaign is also a Kickstarter Staff Pick and we have been featured in US media such as Huffington Post and various US based vegan food blogs.

Here is the team:

Green Pea Cookie Co-Founders
Green Pea Cookie Co-Founders (From left to right: Tan Ying Quan, Larissa Russell, Fiona Lee)

Green Pea Cookie is founded by 3 co-founders, Tan Ying Quan, Fiona Lee and Larissa Russell (above). Ying Quan, aged 24, is currently a Year 4 NUS undergraduate studying Human Resource Management. Fiona Lee, aged 23, recently graduated from NTU with Bachelors in Accountancy and Marketing. Lastly, Larissa Russell, aged 23, is currently working as an analyst in a technology startup called Visually in San Francisco. Larissa is also the only American in the team while Ying Quan and Fiona are Singaporeans.

The idea for Green Pea Cookie first started when Ying Quan went on the NUS Overseas College Program (NOC) in Silicon Valley in year 2014, a one year entrepreneurial program where he worked for Visually as a growth hacker. In June 2014, halfway into the program, Ying Quan asked his parents to bring over some Green Pea Cookies from Singapore during their visited because he wanted to share some Singaporean delights with his colleagues. To his surprise, he watched as his colleagues devoured the box of cookies in just one afternoon.

Green Pea Cookie

To most of us here in Singapore, Green Pea Cookie is a festive cookie that makes its appearance during Chinese New Year. However, most people in US have never heard of the Green Pea Cookie and they were surprised to hear that the cookies were made from roasted green peas. They were fascinated by the use of vegetables in making cookies.

To reach a bigger audience, the Green Pea Cookie team made the recipe Vegan and offered a Gluten-Free option. This provided them the chance to reach out to the masses in the US with a novel and great tasting guilt-free snack. The cookies are sweet and savory, slightly crunchy throughout and creamy at the same time.

Green Pea Cookie Background

Recently, in August 2015, the Green Pea Cookie team has brought the world’s happeaest cookie back to Singapore, setting up their local operations to handcraft each cookie to perfection locally. The Green Pea Cookie team has also launched their online shopping cart on the 11th October 2015, shipping Green Pea Cookie throughout Singapore and US.

My thoughts (Summarised from those of us at the gathering):

Having had other vegan green pea options, I found the Green Pea Cookies a tad sweet, and not as finely grinded that I experience a “melt-in-the-mouth” taste.

However, the Green Pea Cookie team has done a fantastic job behind the marketing. You experience a sense of happiness when you put a piece of “Peater” in your mouth. Peater is the name the Green Pea Cookie team named their original green pea cookie.

Green Pea Cookie Peater

This does brings a sense of justification to the price of the Green Pea Cookies, although I do hope the Green Pea Cookie team will improve their box packaging as the plastic pack is sealed manually with a clip.

I wish the Green Pea Cookie team success in the year 2016 ahead! 🙂

Online:
There are 36 cookies per box.
One box of Green Pea Cookies = $14
Four boxes = $56
Eight boxes = $112

At events (e.g. PasarBella – A Farmer’s Market), both boxes and packs of cookies are sold:
There are 10 cookies per pack.
One box of Green Pea Cookies = $14
One pack of Green Pea Cookies = $4

You can find Green Pea Cookies on their website, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Crystal Maiden’s CNY 2015 Promo: Organic Diamond Dermabrasion Facial, Jamu Tummy and Anti-Cellulite treatment

Here’s an upcoming Chinese New Year promotion by Crystal Maiden Skin Professionals, located in Orchard.

I’ve been with them for over a year and seen great results in my skin (photo below) which I’ve shared in a blog post in October 2014 here.

SGVegan_Less than a year
My skin looks much brighter! ^_^v

In addition, unlike any other dodgy facial salons who just hard sell persuade you into signing up for packages or buy products which you don’t need, Crystal Maiden is not the kind of salon to do that.

I have had many readers who have tried the trials with Crystal Maiden. Majority of them chose to sign up for a package on their own accord after their paid trial as SGVegan readers enjoy a 5% discount off treatments and products. 🙂 And they have been very pleased and enjoy their sessions at Crystal Maiden.

Why do they sign up?

Well, one thing that differentiates Crystal Maiden from the run-of-the-mill salons is that they offer a more holistic care. There is no pressure to sign up, treatments are done very professionally, and the staff even share with you relevant tips on how to stay healthy, especially during the Jamu tummy treatment. 🙂

Click on the links to read more about my facial experience and intensive jamu tummy treatment.

Happy 2013 and let’s start the new year with a good cause!

Hello to all SGVegan readers!

I would like to say a huge thank you to all of you for your support for a healthier lifestyle alternative through this blog. I know not all of you here are vegans or vegetarians but I feel so blessed to have you here on the blog, subscribing to any updates that I post.

SGVegan_Thankyou_2013

To those who are subscribed to my blog (through email or WordPress), I would like to take this opportunity to thank you from the bottom of my heart. A huge apology for the lack of posts on my end for the last quarter of 2012 – its been a hectic personal journey during this period. I am looking forward to posting and sharing more with you on my recent trip to Nepal…coming up! 🙂

In the meantime, I would like to draw your attention to a good cause that is happening this Saturday (tomorrow), 12 Jan 2013 at Fortune Centre, organised by Delcie’s Desserts and Cakes.

Soft Launch Poster-01

As some of you may know already, Delcie’s is having a soft launch opening of her new flagship branch outlet tomorrow 11am-6pm in town (see poster above). Proceeds from all in-store sales will be fully donated to these 2 charities (below) as Delcie’s way of expressing thanks for all the blessings she has received.

  1. Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple
  2. Sri Krishnan Temple (Waterloo Street)

Let me share my humble opinion of Delcie’s Chinese New Year cookies. I have always been a very picky eater of Chinese New Year (CNY) cookies, especially pineapple tarts even when I was a vegetarian. I remember when I was young, I would remove the pineapple and just have the base, which is the tart. My parents would chide me for my lack of manners as it was “not nice” and polite to throw away the pineapple which, in their opinion, is the essence of the pineapple tart. I guess you could say I was a precocious child… pineapple tart without the pineapple. Haha, how embarrassing.

Anyway, all these changed the moment I stepped into Delcie’s and tried their CNY cookies. Ohmygosh, I was hooked!!

I ate every single item, fell in love with them, made orders, and ever since, been a long-time customer. What caused the change?

Well, it is definitely the taste. While the Pineapple tarts/balls are diabetic friendly also (hooray!), they are definitely not lacking in taste/flavor. A single sitting…and I can polish off a full tub of 42 pieces. With huge perseverance… I usually just polish off half a tub, so that I have enough for the next sitting. Trust me, it takes mountains of willpower. Unlike the usual ones outside, one does not get sick and tired of Delcie’s CNY cookies. My favorite ones are Delcie’s Pineapple Balls (Vegan) and Melting White Almond.

*Pics from Delcie’s*

Picture-4Boy-and-Almond-CookieLOW-copy

So…why not take this opportunity to head down to Fortune Centre tomorrow and sample some of her awesome CNY cookies? 🙂

Remember… a new year… a new beginning… new resolutions… so let’s have our new year cookies while supporting a good cause!

(P.S.: Eating these CNY cookies do not make you gain weight unlike the others, haha!)

See you there. 🙂
